Women’s Major Golf Championships

If you play golf in Madrid, you will already know that the most important international events are called Majors.

Of the male Majors, we have already told you their main characteristics. There are four: The Masters of Augusta, US Open, Open Championship, and the PGA Championship.

Now it is the turn of the five tournaments in women’s golf most prestigious in the world: ANA Inspiration, KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, US Women’s Open, British Open and Evian Championship.

Some of these Majors coincide with the male as the US Open, the LPGA Championship or the British Open. Let’s see what the highlights of these big women’s golf events are.

  1. ANA Inspiration

The first big of the year on the women’s circuit is held in California, near Palm Springs. The Mission Hills Country Club of Rancho Mirage is prepared in late March and early April to host this event.

Established in the year 1972 by entertainer Dinah Shore, and after passing called the Nabisco Dinah Shore and Kraft Nabisco Championship, since 2014 is known as the ANA Inspiration, by its sponsor, the Japanese airline ANA.

In 1988, tournament winner Amy Alcott dived into 18th hole Lake. Since 1994 it has been a tradition for all winners to do the same.

  1. KPMG Women’s PGA Championship

The second female major of the year was born from the Union of forces of the LPGA and the PGA of United States, taking over from the LPGA Championship. They are also joined by the sponsor KPMG.

With a bag of about three million dollars, this date takes place every year in a different field in the United States.

  1. US Women’s Open

The US Women’s Open is the third major of the year and is held this July in one of Donald Trump’s fields in the United States.

The tournament was established in 1946, becoming the first and only tournament considered significant since its creation. It became under the control of the USGA (United States Golf Association) in 1953. This year will have a prize purse of five million dollars.

Inbee Park became in 2008 the youngest winner in the history of the tournament.

  1. British Open

At the end of the summer takes place the Women’s British Open. It has been held since the 1970s, although it was not until 2001 that it became a major tournament, replacing the Canadian Open.

It is held on various golf courses in England and Scotland. It currently has a stock exchange of over $ 2.5 million.

In 1982 the Spanish Marta Figures Dotti rose as champion in this event. The Japanese company, Ricoh is the main sponsor of the game.

  1. Evian Championship

The Evian Championship is one of the major women’s golf tournaments held since 1994 at Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-Les-Baines, France, although in the first editions it did not have the status of big and was called Evian Masters. It’s the last Major of the season. A spectacular setting for a date with a prize pool close to $ 3.3 million.

He has been considered Major since 2013. This year’s 2017 edition will be held from 14 to 17 September.
